Artist's Statement

Paintings which create feelings and emotional thoughts.

My art is created from a strong desire to explore universal symbolism and to express the beauty of the human experience in all forms. I strive to entertain a rich tapestry of emotions within my work to acknowledge the diversity of life's journey, and to emphasize the strength of our collective experience.

I am interested light and shade, - and I like to use extreme contrasts in my artwork, - I consciously use this to emphasize the feelings and atmospheres I am after. I am also fascinated by details and like to go close up on my subject. I find it exciting to see how little we really need to see of the body to still understand the feelings. Hands for instance express a lot, you can see and understand a lot through the hands only.

I want people to look at my work and recognise or see an emotion and maybe understand what I was feeling when I painted it. If I am able to evoke a strong emotional experience through my art then I have conveyed something to that viewer, even if the response aroused is different to that I had when I created my paintings.

Through my paintings I express emotions, feelings and atmospheres, subjects everybody can relate to such as agony, melancholy, grief, pain, passion, infatuation and love.

I do not want the figures in my paintings to be assigned to any specific period of time. The figures and the corresponding emotions I portray are timeless. People can relate to them regardless of age, sex, culture or background, they introduce an ethos that everyone can associate with, and make people want to communicate with their inner self.
